What to watch: Women of substance

Amelia

When Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, she became America’s sweetheart and a role model. When she mysteriously disappeared during a mission to fly around the globe in 1937 at the age of 40, she became a legend. Director Mira Nair chronicles Amelia’s life, focusing on her marriage with famous New York publisher George P. Putnam and her relationship with long time friend and lover, pilot Gene Vidal. Oscar-winning Hilary Swank stars in an uncanny resemblance to the legendary aviation pioneer, while Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor play Amelia’s love interests.

Who should watch it? Those interested in epic biopics and those wanting to find out more about one of the most important women in modern history.

Who should avoid it? Most critics have called the film dull, sanitized, conventional and safe in various words.

Cheri

Director Stephen Frears, writer Christopher Hampton, and Michelle Pfeiffer reunite two decades after Dangerous Liaisons in this poignant take on older woman-younger man love story. Adapted from Colette’s two novels of 1920s, the film is set in the early 1900s in France, during the Belle Epoque. Pfeiffer’s Lea is a famous courtesan about to retire now that she is of age. Rupert Friend’s Cheri is the 19-year-old son of a fellow courtesan (charming Kathy Bates). Lea takes Cheri into her country house to teach him the basic necessities of being a man, only to keep him for six years. The mismatched two fall into an unlikely happy relationship, where they head towards the impending doom that is the crises of age the two will have to go through in their own ways. Ironically, Pfeiffer, an actress of 50 in an ageist business, plays a woman whose career comes to an end because of her age.

Who should watch it? Those who like romance on its heavy side on screen, along with lush visuals and beautiful gowns.

Who should avoid it? Those who are expecting yet another Dangerous Liaisons with its sexy edge and the dramatic unfolding.
