The Wolfman

Move over vampires. It’s time for the werewolves to get their coveted screen time. In this remake, you have all the necessary ingredients for typical Gothic horror. Mist falling over the moors, vast, candle-lit castles, good people gone bad, family secrets and, of course, the supernatural that was let out of the closet with Romanticism as a statement to emerging science. Benicio del Toro plays the damned, 19th-century aristocrat Lawrence Talbot who comes home to his castle, Blackmoor, from America to find a supernatural force haunting the dark moors in the moonlight. Anthony Hopkins, meanwhile, plays Talbot’s father.

Who should watch it? Those who like Gothic horror, Gothic kitsch, or those who want to welcome an emerging new dark force to replace vampires on screen.

Who should avoid it? Those who are expecting a 21st century interpretation of werewolf lore, as with recent examples of the vampire genre in the Twilight franchise, the HBO series True Blood and this week’s Thirst.
